Thyroid Radiation Exposure from Mammograms is Extremely Low, Despite Media Reports
A joint statement from the American College of Radiology and The Society of Breast Imaging indicates that the radiation dose to the thyroid from a mammogram is extremely low. The thyroid is NOT exposed to the direct x-ray beam and it receives only a tiny amount of scattered radiation (0.005 milligray), which is equivalent to 30 minutes of natural background radiation received by all Americans. Patients are urged to have their routine screening mammograms, which have been documented to save lives. No woman should delay breast imaging based on this erroneous media report. Thyroid shields are available at all Advanced Radiology offices upon patient request. Read the joint statement from the American College of Radiology and The Society of Breast Imaging. Click here.
